PVC Tarpaulins for Heavy Duty Applications

Our PVC Tarps are manufactured from a 550gsm polyvinyl chloride (more commonly known as PVC) material. It's a synthetic fabric, generally considered to be a step up in terms of quality and durability from our polyethylene tarpaulins. This is most apparent when comparing the weight of the two materials which is typically measured in grams per square metre and abbreviated as gsm.

Polyethylene tarpaulins range from 70gsm to 180gsm whilst our PVC Tarps weigh in at approximately 550gsm. WIth this in mind PVC may be anywhere between 3 to almost 8 times as heavy as Poly Tarps. The weight increase is a result of two main factors: higher weave density (the number of weaves per inch of material) and thicker lamination (the top and bottom protective layers of the material).

These factors ultimately make PVC a thicker material which means it's more durable and harder wearing but also less translucent than Poly Tarps. This is particularly relevant if light penetration is a consideration; quite often the case if the material is being used as a roof canopy or Market Stall Covers. Opting for a lighter coloured or Clear PVC will help in these situations.

Weight is also a key consideration in situations where PVC Tarp is being regularly fitted or removed from a structure. This is very common in the case of Market Stall Sheets. Market operators such as local councils prefer PVC because of its durability but market traders or council employees tasked with fitting the Stall Tarps may object that the increased weight makes installing them more difficult.

Stall Covers aside, PVC material is also commonly used for commercial vehicle coverings such as Trailer Tarps and curtain sides for trucks. It's rot proof nature also makes it ideal for long term outdoor use; think anything from patio furniture covers, pool covers and sand pit covers to marquee and pop up gazebos canopies.
